Four months ago my family received a trial we never thought we would be able to endure. But in this trial we were able to find Heavenly Father’s hand, guiding us.
On September 29th 2014, my dad, Jared Royer, passed away. He was on a trip with some friends from work, they had gone down to Catalina Island for the week to go scuba diving. Of course my family thought that it was just another one of my dad’s crazy adventures that would come and go quickly. But on Tuesday morning my mom got a call from the Coast Guard telling her that my dad had been lost at sea for over 15 hours. He was night diving with his friends looking for lobster when they saw him surface and call for help, then shortly going back under the water. We all had hope that my dad was still alive, because he was such a strong person. He was an ironman, cyclist, runner, and much more. We knew that he would do everything he could to get back to us.
After 3 days of the Coast Guard looking all over land and sea for my dad, they finally called and told us they were calling off the search. At that moment we all prayed to Heavenly Father and asked him to please help them find my dad. Later the next day we received a tender mercy. The Sheriff called and told us that a scuba team volunteered to keep searching for my dad for one more day. At this point we were sure that my dad wasn’t able to make it. But the team was able to find my dad’s body, which was a tremendous blessing for us. We finally could receive some answers as of what happened. My dad left behind a wife/my mom MaryLynn, and four children… Brendan (16), Megan/ me (14), Madelyn (6), and Kate (3).
Through this trial my family received so many blessings, it has been amazing to look back on all the help and kindness we have been given from others. I also have learned so much from this trial. I have a stronger testimony of the church. Without this trial I know that I wouldn’t be able to be the person I am today, and I know that it will change me for the better. Through this experience I have learned so many different lessons. Heavenly Father knew that this trial was the best for my family.
I have had so many amazing spiritual experiences, one of them happened when my dad first passed away. I was laying on my bed crying and begging Heavenly Father to bring my dad back, when all of a sudden I got this feeling that my dad was right beside me. But my dad was crying with me, he was wishing there was something he could do to help us. He also hated to see our family in so much pain, he wanted more than anything for all of us to be happy.
That is one of the biggest lessons I have learned… It is important to be happy. It’s okay to be sad, but it is important to be happy. I stay happy by remembering where my dad is and what he is doing. Taking into account of what my dad said, I try to find the happy in every single day. I have a journal where everyday I write one thing that made me feel happy in that day. For me, it is important to look at the positive things in life, it helps me realize all the blessing I have been given.
I also try to remember that my dad is serving God, but not only that, he is keeping my family and I safe! He also is now able to teach me in ways that he couldn’t here on earth. He has already taught me so much already.
One of my favorite quotes is, “Because someone we love is in Heaven, there is a little bit of Heaven in our home.” The veil is so thin, and I have a true testimony of that. I can feel my dad close by me everyday. I know that he is so happy in Heaven, but I also know that he misses our family and can’t wait for us to be a forever family in Heaven again! Through faith and trust in the Lord, I have been able to feel these things. I have gained true knowledge of the Plan of Salvation and I know that if we remain faithful in the Lord that we will be able to return to him and our loved ones again!
